The Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship (USA)

The Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship competition is open to undergraduate (including Barnard College) and graduate students who are U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents who are enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a full-time program (either domestic or overseas) that combines modern foreign language training with international or area studies.

FLAS awards are contingent upon funding from the U.S. Department of Education.

The FLAS grant amounts are:


Graduate students tuition grant is $18,000 and the stipend is $15,000

Undergraduate students tuition grant is $10,000 and the stipend is $5,000.


FLAS fellows are responsible for the on-time payment of the remaining tuition balance and fees.

All applications must be submitted through GSAS's online fellowship application by Thursday, February 14, 2013.  Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.  Please read the directions and information carefully for the entire application.  Applications must include all of the items listed below.  The applicant must upload all items electronically with the exception of the letters of recommendation which are uploaded by the recommenders.
