Lviv is a unique city, in which the history, culture, mentality of two worlds – the East and the West – are tolerantly merged

EURO2012

 

In 2012 Ukraine and Poland co-hosted the European Football Championship. Lviv was included into the list of Ukraine’s Euro 2012 hosting cities. It is interesting to note that Lviv hosted the first Ukrainian football match in 1894. 

Several improvements to the city were made in preparation for this huge event. Specifically:

  • The Lviv international airport was reconstructed, advancing its carrying capacity up to 1.6 million passengers a year

  • A new highway was laid through the territory of Lviv Region from Berlin, through southern Poland and the whole territory of Ukraine from west to east

  • Construction of new and reconstruction of already existing roads, junctions and parking areas within the limits of the city was carried out 

  • Construction of a new modern stadium which will be able to seat 32 thousand people was completed 

  • Several new hotels were built and existing hotels were renovated
